I heard Midcontinent Communications is buying out Charter in Marshall.  Is that true?

No, this rumor is not true.    We contacted Tom Simmons, the Senior Vice President of Public Policy for Midcontinent Communications and he offered this response.

Midcontinent is not in the process of buying the Marshall system from Charter. Midcontinent did purchase a number of Charter systems in Minnesota last year, which may be the source of the rumor. We have been busy integrating those systems into our company by providing direct connections with our broadband network and providing those customers with the most advanced applications we have including expanded Video on Demand, a full list of HD channels and DOCSIS 3.0 broadband which can deliver the Internet to homes and businesses at 50 MBPS. Marshall is a great community, but we have no immediate plans to add it to the list of Midcontinent communities.

I h
eard that there was going to be a new program starting up in Marshall where people could buy frozen meat and other items in bulk at a lower price.  Is this true?

We contacted Western Community Action in Marshall and they told us that starting July 23rd, a new program called Fare for All Express is coming to our area.  Western Community Action is becoming a sales site for Fare for All Express.

Fare for All Express works with community partners to offer quality, affordable grocery packages each month.  Through its volume-purchasing power, Fare For All Express is able to buy nutritious food at below-retail prices and pass on these savings to our participants.

There are no income restrictions for participating in the program, and you don’t have to pre-pay for your food.  Simply visit Western Community Action’s office each month to look at the grocery packages and make your purchase!  There are also no guidelines regarding where you live!  So it’s really open to anyone who wants to stretch their food dollars.

Fare for All Express packages contain a variety of healthy, fresh, quality food items, including fruits, vegetables, frozen meats and staple items. You can purchase as few or as many packages as you want each month!

Come to Western Community Action on the sales date between 11am and 1pm.  Fare for All Express accepts cash, EBT cards, credit and debit cards.  Unfortunately they are not able to accept personal checks.

Here is an example of some of the packages that are available.  You are able to view the package before you buy it.  Packages change each month, and specials like a Grill Pack might be available during the summer, while a Holiday Pack may be available around the holidays.

Regular Pack-$18 (includes at least 4 kinds of fresh veggies, 2 kinds of fresh fruit, and 3-4 pounds of frozen meat)

Holiday Pack--$25 (1 frozen turkey (approx 12 lbs.), 1 pkg of boneless skinless chicken breasts (1.5 lbs.); 1 pork tenderloin (approx. 1.5 lbs.), 2 packages of frozen veggies, 1 loaf of bread, and 1 frozen peach pie.

Sales dates will begin July 23rd, 2010 and will be each month on the 3rd Friday.  All distributions will begin at 11am and end at 1pm.  Western Community Action’s office is located south of Hwy 23 on Saratoga Street- 1400 S. Saratoga in Marshall.

Please call 507-537-1416 and ask to speak to Wendy or Angela for more information about Fare for All Express!

I heard a bookstore is opening in Marshall somewhere.  Do you know if that is true?

Book Store
We contacted  Rachel Myhre, the VP of Public Relations Students in Free Enterprise and got the scoop.   Here is what Rachel sent us in response to this rumor.

The SMSU Accounting Club, along with SMSU S.I.F.E. (Students In Free Enterprise) are opening a used bookstore in Marshall. The bookstore is not for profit. Any profits go to scholarships for SMSU students. The store will be located in "The Village" or where the Clarkfield Outdoors Outlet is located. The address is 309 E College Dr, or across from the Freedom Gas station. We are really excited for this opportunity, and we feel that it is a great way to get involved with the community, and to fill a void in Marshall! Currently there are no bookstores in the city of Marshall, and we plan to bring one with a cozy atmosphere!

The store should be opening in the middle of March. At this time we are accepting donations of books from the community. We are accepting all different types of books. Examples of some that we have collected already include children's books, novels, suspense/thrillers, romance, and even gardening and recipe books! We will be having a book drop off on March 6th, 2010 between the hours of 8 - 5. The donations can be dropped off at "The Village." If you are unable to drop of donations on March 6th, I can be contacted to arrange a time to pick up the donations.

We want to make this a community effort and encourage everyone to donate used books!

Sincerely,

Rachel M. Myhre
Vice President of Public Relations
SMSU Accounting Club
